LII Meeting of Copedem discusses privacy, Human Rights and Artificial Intelligence in the Judiciary

The discussion of technological advances and the performance of the Judiciary, aiming at the promotion of Human Rights, digital inclusion, and privacy on the web were the themes of the LII Meeting of the Permanent College of Directors of State Schools of the Judges (COPEDEM), held for the second time in partnership with the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (ESMAT), in a virtual way due to sanitary restrictions still in effect.

Also at the opening of the event, a posthumous tribute was paid to Judge George Lopes Leite, who died from complications of Covid-19. In the presentations, themes such as the challenges of the judiciary due to the eminent use of digital resources in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the impact of the digital age, the cyber and the virtual space in the life of the citizen were discussed throughout the morning. Current issues such as post-truth, post-human, giga and nano power, automated and monitoring systems that invade the privacy of human beings were also debated under the light of the Judiciary.

According to minister Mauro Campbell Marques, Deputy General Director of the National School for Training and Improvement of Judges (ENFAM), the virtual holding of the LII Meeting of Copedem reflects an immense satisfaction of the need for state schools of the Judges to discuss current and indispensable issues for the practice of law, "in order to overcome the barriers of improvement to better exercise the activity of judging with impartiality. Barriers often imposed by the fact that Brazilian society is hyper-complex", he stated.

For Judge Marco Villas Boas, president of Copedem, over the past decades the College has contributed to the strategies for training judges and public servers throughout the country, improving the political debate, offering various courses for judges and the community in general, lawyers, and institutions. "This is a new place that makes us insecure in the field of law. It would be interesting if all schools opened up the question of human rights in the digital age, in order to find with less difficulty the results for the super-complex problems that arise every year", he said.

Due to the health restrictions of the pandemic, the activities took place again remotely. The organization and transmission of the event was the responsibility of the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (ESMAT), with transmission through Copedem's page on the YouTube platform. The theme of the event was Human Rights and Digital Law - Digital inclusion and the use of new technologies and artificial intelligence in the Judiciary - and included lectures by renowned magistrates and professors from various national and international institutions.
