The Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (Esmat), in partnership with the Directorate of People Management (DIGEP) announce the "Literary Workshops" of 2024, aimed at promoting guided reflections on contemporary themes present in everyday life, in social relations and in the workplace, such as racial and social class inequalities, gender oppressions and sexualities.

Open to the public, the project of this year will be divided into four classes, each with three reading circles. These meetings will take place in April, June, September and November, via the Google Meet platform. In each class, a literary work will be presented and discussed over the course of three weekly meetings. The first book, which will address inequalities of race and class, will be "The Dumping Room” (O Quarto de Despejo), by Carolina Maria de Jesus.

Registrations for the first class of the Workshop will be available from Monday (March 25th), with thirty vacancies on offer. The first circles will take place on April 10th, 17th and 24th, from 7 to 8:40 pm.

About the author and the work

Carolina Maria de Jesus is one of the most important black writers in the Brazilian literature, whose work has both literary and political relevance. Her first book, "Dumping Room” (Quarto de Despejo), released in 1960, is one of the most important works of the Brazilian literature, selling around three million copies in sixteen languages.

Born in the State of Minas Gerais, Carolina moved to São Paulo in 1947, living in the Canindé slum, where she faced extreme poverty and lived on the streets. Inspired by these experiences and her capacity for observation, she wrote her main work, "Dumping Room” (Quarto de Despejo).
