On the morning of Monday (December 6th), at the headquarters of the Court of Justice of the State of Tocantins (CJTO), the chief of staff of the Presidency of CJTO, Kênia Oliveira, made the symbolic delivery of Christmas baskets that were collected, during the month of November, by magistrates and servers of the Judiciary. The campaign assembled kits containing bath and face towels, slippers, pads and other personal hygiene items.
The official recipient of the baskets was the executive secretary of the State Secretariat of Citizenship and Justice (Seciju), Geraldo Divino Cabral, together with the team of directors of the four State Women's Prison Units and two other inmates who personally received the kits.
The initiative of the Court of Justice of the State of Tocantins, held in partnership with the General Internal Affairs of Justice (GIAJ), the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (Esmat) and the Court of Palmas, is being held for the second consecutive year and aims to take to the inmates not only basic hygiene items, but also a gesture of attention that contributes significantly to the re-socialization process.
According to the chief of staff of the Presidency of CJTO, Kênia Cristina de Oliveira, the action has a direct impact on the self-esteem of inmates. "These are women who are often involved by their partners and end up being detained and, most of the time, are abandoned by their families. What we are trying to do is to give the minimum conditions of hygiene and dignity. We have to contribute, especially women, because we know how embarrassing it is not to have the necessary materials during the menstrual period, for example," she stressed.
For the executive secretary of the State Secretariat of Citizenship and Justice (Seciju), Geraldo Cabral, "the CJ has always been and is one of our biggest partners in every way and this initiative represents a greatness of all of the Court in collaborating with the execution of the sentence beyond its function, calling the society, through its servers, to contribute with the State in the full assistance to women deprived of liberty. We thank everyone who mobilized this action on behalf of the president of the CJ, Judge João Rigo Guimarães, and the chief of staff of the presidency, Kênia Oliveira".
A gesture of respect
The director of the Women's Penal Unit of Talismã, Edionayr Cabral Silva, evaluates the Judiciary's action as an important part in the process of restoring these women's self-esteem. "As they are isolated from society, the arrival of these items at Christmas time represents much more than hygiene care. They know that there are people out here who care about their welfare, it's like a gesture of affection that soothes the soul and gives hope," said the director.
We are human beings
According to the words of the inmate herself, G.M.S., who is currently being held in the Palmas Women's Prison Unit, "We are very happy, because although we are not well seen by society, it is very good to know that there are still people who look at us with a sense of humanity. Although we are here, we are still human beings. We are very grateful.
The Judiciary's action also counts on the support of the Citizenship and Justice Secretariat, which is working on the distribution of the materials.
