Waste produced in the district of Colinas do Tocantins, in the north of the state, such as paper, glass, plastic and metal, will now be recycled. With a commitment on contributing to the environment and strengthening sustainability, the Court of Justice of the State of Tocantins (TJTO), through the Coordination of Social and Environmental Management and Social Responsibility (Cogersa), implemented the project on Solidary Selective Collection at the Forum of the city on Monday (January 27th).
The initiative aims to promote the correct disposal of recyclable waste and the proper destination of seized goods, as well as contributing to sustainable economic development, since it enables the social inclusion of waste collectors and cooperatives.
Colinas is the 8th district to receive the project, which began in 2021 at the headquarters of the Court of Justice. In addition to Colinas, the project has already been implemented in the courts of Palmas, Araguaína, Gurupi, Porto Nacional, Paraíso do Tocantins, Alvorada and Araguatins. Natividade and Dianópolis are the next to have the action.
Present at the event, the president of the TJTO, Justice Etelvina Maria Sampaio Felipe, highlighted the work of Justice Ângela Prudente, vice-president of the Court of Justice and responsible for the Management Committee of the Sustainable Logistics Plan of the Judiciary, and spoke about the actions developed in recent years. “We have changed our behavior a lot, our culture in relation to sustainability. Today, in the courts, we no longer have disposable cups, the use of paper is already decreasing, but there is still a lot to be done.”

In this sense, the president also mentioned the reduction in water and energy consumption, such as the replacement of jugs with water purifiers and the construction of 10 photovoltaic plants, which will begin soon. Hybrid cars are also being used to reduce polluting gases.
“We are looking for a better future for the next generations,” she emphasized.
On the occasion, the Justice congratulated the district of Colinas, where she served for most of her judicial career, for hosting the project, and highlighted the partnership work with the cooperatives and associations of waste pickers.
Sustainability and social responsability
Justice Ângela Prudente referred to the project on Selective Collection as a significant milestone for the Judiciary of the state of Tocantins when it comes to sustainability, which, according to the president of the Manager Committee of the PLS of the TJTO, goes far beyond the socio-environmental issue. “It symbolizes our commitment to environmental preservation, but also to sustainable economic development and the promotion of an organizational culture based on social and environmental responsibility.”

Regarding selective collection, the Justice said that it is a simple and transformative gesture. “Separating recyclable materials such as paper, glass and metal allows these materials to be reused and recycled. In doing so, we reduce the pressure on natural resources, promote a circular economy and, above all, create opportunities,” she said, pointing out the great difference for those who need it most.
“In addition to being an environmentally responsible practice, Solidary Selective Collection is also an instrument of social inclusion. By adopting this initiative, we are promoting the appreciation of waste pickers, who are part of an invisible and vulnerable section of society,” she explained, stressing that this appreciation of waste pickers also strengthens the cooperatives.
“Today, we are planting another seed here,” she said, thanking Justice Etelvina and recalling the achievements of her administration in the area of sustainability.
Thanking the TJTO for implementing the Selective Collection project in the district, the director of the Forum of the district of Colinas, Judge Marcelo Laurito Paro, highlighted his satisfaction at developing the pilot project for seized goods. “It's a problem we face in the State, but with the support of the Court, we're trying to solve it, everyone together,” he said, also thanking the district for the ‘Green Seal’, an award it will receive from the Judiciary of the state of Tocantins on Friday (January 31st).
