International Seminar On Ai Addresses Challenges For The Future Of The Brazilian Judiciary

The last day (August 9th) of the programming of the Seminar on "Contemporary Perspectives of Artificial Intelligence in the Judicial System, in Law and in Business", held in New York (USA), was marked by debates and presentations focused on the potential and challenges that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies bring to the judiciary. Organized by the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (ESMAT) in partnership with the Permanent College of Directors of State Schools of the Magistracy (COPEDEM) and with Google Cloud, the event brought together experts and leaders from both the public and private sectors to discuss the impact of these innovations on the justice system.

The programming began with the welcome words of Milton Burgese, vice President of the Public Sector in Latin America in Google Cloud, followed by Minister Benedito Gonçalves, President of the National School for the Training and Improvement of Magistrates, that reinforced the importance of technology in the continuous training of Brazilian magistrates.

In the first lecture of the day, entitled "Prompt Engineering: How Generative AI can contribute to the training of magistrates", João Thiago Poço and Fabrício Sanchez, both from Google Cloud, highlighted the role of AI technologies in creating educational tools that can enhance the process of training magistrates, making it more interactive and efficient.

The debate on cyber security was also highlighted in the panel on "Threat Intelligence and Cyber security: Building a resilient defense". Moderated by Luiz Felipe Gasparini, security expert of Google Cloud, the panel included Jon Ford, Director of Mandiant Public Sector, and MK Palmore, Director of the Office of the CISO in Google Cloud. They discussed the importance of building robust cyber defenses to protect law enforcement institutions from increasingly sophisticated threats.

In the panel on "AI Regulation and Policy Framework to Accelerate Digital Transformation," Michael Mohallem, Government Affairs & Public Policies consultant at Google Cloud, discussed AI regulatory policies and how they can drive digital transformation in the public sector. During the following panel, "AI regulation in the legal and business context," moderated by Mohallem, the Justice Marco Villas Boas, President of Copedem, noted the importance of discussions about the implementation of AI in the judiciary.

"Our discussions have been directed to the maximum use of all available tools, including the potential of predictive analysis. We also need to consider how all this will be built, because the prospect that it happens in isolation can pose risks for society and the justice system, especially regarding to biases. What we do not want is an authoritarian Artificial Intelligence, which limits freedoms or hurts human dignity", he recalled.
