Judge debates racial issues in the brazilian prison system

The similarities between the historical times of slavery and the conditions of incarceration in Brazil were some of the topics of debate during the lecture by Judge Renata do Nascimento e Silva, on the second day of the State Workshop on Penal Alternatives.

Moderated by Delisangela Alves de Souza, a social worker from the Alternative Punishment Center (CEPEMA) in the city of Paraíso do Tocantins, the first panel discussed the racial issue and criminal justice. For Judge Renata, "it is extremely important to reflect on this central theme in our society. It is a very important theme for each one of us as a society that intends to integrate in a democratic state of law", she said.

During her presentation, the Judge made a historical review of racial marginalization in Brazil, which substantiates the argument of the existence of a policy of imprisonment of black people, highlighting that the processes of continuing imprisonment against this group, which consists of the enslaved groups of people in Brazil yesterday, and the majority of people imprisoned, remain in Brazil today. These notes reaffirm how the socio-historical formation of Brazil was and still is forged from slavery.

Judge Renata also cited, as an example, the genocide of indigenous peoples during the Portuguese colonization times and how this fact contributed to the current picture of the Brazilian prison system.

Still in the morning of this Wednesday (22nd), the second panel was ministered by the Prosecutor Cynthia Assis de Paula and mediated by the coordinator of Cepema of the city of Palmas, Marciano Almeida da Silva. In her speech, the panelist exposed information related to negotiated justice and the agreement of not to prosecute.
