I Seminar on Socio-environmental Management: Networking for Solid Waste Management in Tocantins discusses individual, collective and public authority responsibility attitudes

The challenges of implementing and managing the National Policy for Solid Waste nº 12.305, of 2010, in Brazil and in the State of Tocantins, the State Plan for Solid Waste (PERS-TO), generating income and jobs for collectors of recyclable materials, were the topics discussed on the first day of the I Seminar on Socio-environmental Management: Networking for Solid Waste Management in Tocantins. The event is promoted by Sustainable TO Network, by the Court of Justice and by the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (ESMAT) and will continue on Wednesday (16th), starting at 2 pm.

In his speech, Justice Marco Villas Boas, Esmat's General Director, recalled that the planet's degradation is causing the effect of environmental vulnerability, accompanying humanity in the other vulnerabilities: economic and social. "I am very encouraged and even moved by the range of this meeting, which evidently has a background of technical and academic knowledge, but stands out above all for its fraternity, for the solidarity that each of the members of this board has with our brothers and sisters who suffer as a result of the Planet's degradation. We have not yet reached the Anthropocene era, of course, but the care for nature demands attention, not to a being in a state of vulnerability, but mainly in a state of fragility," he said.

About the I Seminar, the Justice reinforced the need for solid waste management and also the immediate importance of conducting environmental education activities. "We are making the School of the Judges always available for activities of this nature due to the size of the impact it reveals in society, especially in relation to something so expensive, which is everyone's health. In these pandemic times, we know that what we are seeing and going through is not by chance. The denialism of decades has led us to this situation, and worse things may come, especially the transmission of vectors through water, this is something I have been saying and putting forward. Today 70% of the diseases are transmitted by water, not by air," he said.

Among the proposals of the Seminar are: Promote exchange of experiences and foster initiatives among the partners of the Sustainable TO Network and others interested in the treatment of Socio-Environmental Management and Solid Waste Management in the state of Tocantins, besides promoting the alignment of the actions of the partner institutions of the Sustainable TO Network Project with the Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030 of the United Nations (UN); Provide subsidies to the Judiciary in the State of Tocantins for better monitoring of the Waste Management indicator by the Steering Committee of the Sustainable Logistic Plan (CGPLS), an indicator that impacts the achievement of the CNJ Quality Award.

The Sustainable TO Network includes the Judiciary of the State of Tocantins, the Regional Electoral Court (TRE-TO), the State Prosecution (MPE), the State Public Defender's Office (DPE), and the State University of Tocantins (UNITINS).
