Esmat and TJTO discuss empowerment of native peoples and qualification of Brazilian magistrates with Head of the Human Security System of the un

During the Forum on Security, Human Development and Social Cohesion, held in the city of Rio de Janeiro (RJ) on April 15th and 16th, Justice Marco Villas Boas, General Director of the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (Esmat) and President of the Permanent College of Directors of State Schools of the Magistracy (Copedem), spoke with Mr. Yukio Takasu, head of the Human Security System of the UN and Assistant General Secretary of the UN, about social development, empowerment of native communities and global security. The programming included several lectures on confronting violence, fighting organized crime, and other socio-environmental issues.

As head of the Human Security System and Assistant General Secretary for Human Security of the UN, Yukio Takasu brings with him a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights around the world. In addition, his position as representative of Mr. António Guterres, General Secretary, lends even more weight and authority to his words and actions. The  partnership of the UN with Copedem suggests a new path in the promotion and valorization of human rights and the possibility of implementing inter-institutional dialogues linked to the valorization of life and the provision of justice, like the Esmat project, approved at the Conference held in Quito in 2020.

Partnership

Alongside Justice Marco Villas Boas, General Director of Esmat and President of the Permanent College of Directors of State Schools of the Magistracy, Takasu took part in frank and constructive discussions on the challenges facing the global community in relation to security, development and social cohesion. The intersection among human rights, climate and environmental justice was explored in depth, highlighting the need for integrated and collaborative approaches for tackling complex problems.

The meeting between Takasu and Villas Boas symbolized not only a dialogue, but also a collaboration among different sectors of society in search of common solutions. Their conversations and interactions during the forum certainly catalyzed new ideas and initiatives for future partnerships to improve and train Brazilian magistrates.

According to Villas Boas, international cooperation in favor of human security, which brings together guidelines for security, human development and social cohesion, expands the potential of the Coplad/Ilanud programs for Latin America, which is why public and private institutions must join forces to support the activities of the United Nations, especially in favor of developing or underdeveloped countries.

About the event

The event was organized by the Latin American Permanent Committee on Crime Prevention (COPADL) and the United Nations Latin American Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (ILANUD), institutions committed to promote security and justice in the Latin American region.
