The Court of Justice of the State of Tocantins (TJTO) is one of the 15 courts in the country to join the National Judicial Pact for Simple Language, through the Technical Cooperation Agreement No. 7/2024, of the National Council of Justice (CNJ). The agreement was signed on February 22nd.

The agreement aims at technical and operational cooperation to establish and promote a culture in the Judiciary of accessible communication, based on the use of simple, direct and understandable language for all people in the production of judicial decisions and in general communication with society.

In addition, the courts must improve forms of inclusion, with the use of the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and audio description or other similar tools, whenever possible.

SimplesTOC

Improving communication with society through accessible language is one of the goals (No. 7) of the 2023/2025 administration of Justice Etelvina Maria Sampaio Felipe.  In December of 2023, the Judiciary of the State of Tocantins created the SimplesTOC Program, according to the Joint Ordinance No. 16/2023, which brought a single annex with a version in Simple Language, created with the civil servers of the institution in a learning workshop.

The project has a partnership with the General Internal Affairs of Justice and the Inovassol Innovation Center, and arose from the product of research carried out by the legal advisory coordinator of the General Directorate, Roberta Martins Soares Maciel Ismael, who is studying for a master's degree in Judicial Provision and Human Rights at UFT/Esmat.

The Pact

The courts will act along five main lines, which involve: simplifying the language of documents; brevity and objectivity in communications; education and training of technical staff; use of technological tools and institutional partnerships.
