Team from the arts, knowledge and crafts of the indigenous peoples of the state of Tocantins project follows the mourning ritual in the krahô village

The Arts, Knowledge, and Crafts of the Indigenous Peoples of the State of Tocantins project team visited, between June 21st and 24th, 2022, the Indigenous Land Kraolândia, in the municipality of Itacajá, state of Tocantins.

In a search for the valuation of the cultural diversity and the traditions of indigenous communities, the visit had as its purpose the audiovisual and documentary production of the Amjikin Pàrcahàc. A tribute ritual held as a way to finish mourning a relative, in this case, an indigenous person from the Xerente people, who lived among the Krahô, in the Manoel Alves village.

The ritual is a complex ceremony that involves body painting, haircutting, nightly singing, and also a race with a buriti log. In addition to the production of the paparuto, a large manioc cake with meat distributed to all who participate in the tribute.

For the Krahô, death is not interpreted only as a biophysical-chemical fact. Both life and death are part of the same cycle. Death, then, is not an end, but only a passage.

The production of the documentary is one of the products of the Arts, Knowledge and Crafts Project of the Indigenous Peoples of the State of Tocantins. It is hoped that this work can contribute to the dissemination of the history, not only of the Krahô people, but also as the culture of the original peoples of our state.

Arts, Knowledge and Crafts Project of the Indigenous Peoples of the State of Tocantins

The project is an initiative of the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (ESMAT) and the Court of Justice of the State of Tocantins (TJTO), which aims to value, give visibility to, and promote the traditional and cultural activities of the native people, as well as to build up an ethnographic collection at ESMAT.

To wake new emotions and perspectives up about the indigenous peoples, an immersion in images, texts, soundtracks, artifacts, and handicrafts from the indigenous world is necessary; therefore, the Project team will travel through all the Indigenous Lands of  the State of Tocantins during the year 2022 in search of materials for the exhibition.
