"Let's walk through this period together, because I'm sure it will be enriching for all of us, especially for you who are embarking on this course," said Justice Marco Villas Boas, General Director of the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (Esmat), as he welcomed the new residents of the Residency Program with Access to Postgraduate Studies in Judicial Practice (PRJud).

On Thursday afternoon (April 11th), the Justice emphasized the importance of the Judiciary as a fundamental pillar of democracy, highlighting its role in moderating and resolving conflicts. In his speech, he underlined the continuous efforts of Esmat to improve studies, research and the quality of its courses.

"It's a privilege to welcome them to our academic environment of continuing professional education; we have tried every year to improve our studies, our research and also the quality of the courses we develop here so that there is a satisfactory result both for the institution and for society in general, because the Judiciary is one of the pillars of Western democracy," he said.

Faced with the challenges of increasing demands on the judiciary, the Justice pointed to the use of innovative and technological tools, such as generative artificial intelligence, as promising ways to improve the efficiency of the legal system. Despite these advances, he acknowledged that there are still hurdles to overcome, such as approval by ethical control committees, and stressed that, despite technology, the essence of jurisdiction remains the art of decision-making, which requires discernment and sensitivity in dealing with people.

"I've come this far to say this: we have all this in hand, but we must have the courage to continue our artistic work. Let's put it this way, it's the art of decision. We have to reach a state of the art, of jurisdiction that gives us certainty, quality and security that we are dealing with people, who are human beings," he said.

The Justice also mentioned some current legal issues that could guide the research of the residents, such as the question of the right to the environment as a substantive right of indigenous peoples.

In a statement, resident Erika Tavares shared her impressions of the class, pointing out the importance of understanding how the Judiciary works and the electronic systems used.

"The class of today was essential for us to better understand the competence of the Judiciary of the State of Tocantins and also how the SEI, EPROC and SEEU electronic systems work. I would like to thank Judge Flávia Bovo who, with an excellent didactic approach, explained the subject in depth, which will be essential for the legal practice of all the residents. I believe it will be a unique experience for my learning and I hope to contribute with my practice to the better functioning of the Body," he said.

Felipe Milhomem, another resident, expressed his high expectations of the legal residency and his enthusiasm at being able to learn from the authorities of the Judiciary of the State of Tocantins. "I always had high expectations of the legal residency, from the moment I registered. I graduated from UFT in the city of Palmas and I worked in a lot of bodies, I had a lot of internship experience (eight in total) and I had never interned at any level of the Court of Justice, so I was very happy when I applied to the Court of Justice of the State of Tocantins. My expectations are high, I hope I can do a good job and make the most of the knowledge of the Judges, who are people I have a lot of admiration for. I also intend to take full advantage of the specialization, which is synchronous with the residency, is incredibly complete, and will certainly be a differential in my professional training," he shared.
