With commitment, respect and listening. On Wednesday (October 1st), the General Internal Affairs of Justice (CGJUS) held the Third Seminar on the Elderly, with the central theme on “Justice, Care, and Ancestry.” With over 400 registrants, the meeting brought together elderly people, experts, and civil servers in the auditorium of the Court of Justice, in a programming also broadcast on the YouTube channel of Esmat, expanding its reach and reinforcing inclusion.

The official opening featured a performance by singer Dorivã Dantas, a reference in the culture of the state of Tocantins, who brought to the stage songs filled with memory and regional identity, strengthening bonds of belonging. During the programming, the audience was immersed in the sensitivity of the (En)Cena Maturity Theater, an extension project of the Federal University of the state of Tocantins (UFT) coordinated by Professor Renata Patrícia da Silva, with creative plays that provoked laughter and reflections on active aging.

The seminar continued with the opening lecture by professor, writer, and indigenous activist Eliane Potiguara, who addressed the theme on “Old age, ancestry, and public policy: Are there losses, respect, and challenges for indigenous elders in this century of pain?” Eliane emphasized that old age is not only a biological process, but also a territory of memory and wisdom, which carries ancestry and deserves recognition both in public policy and in society.

“It is important to embrace happiness in life, whatever the cost, until the very end. Our wisdom of time, and who is wisdom? Our elders, our seniors, our elderly. Therefore, let us always pray for justice to be done," said the speaker.

The event also brought reflections on the role of the Judiciary in promoting and protecting the rights of the elderly. The General Chief of Justice, Justice Pedro Nelson de Miranda Coutinho, emphasized that the seminar is an opportunity to demonstrate care and citizenship, reinforcing constitutional values.

“One of the most important things in life is to respect the elderly, to respect our ancestry. The General Internal Affairs of Justice, by being present at an event like this, plays a fundamental role. We are showing society the need to care for the elderly, indigenous people, and everyone who needs special attention," he pointed out.

Each lecture, presentation, and activity seeks to highlight the life experiences of the participants, bringing public policies closer to the reality of each senior citizen. Dalva da Silva Costa, honored with the “Maturity that Inspires” award and a member of the forum since 2001, recounted the excitement of participating in the seminar for the first time.

“It is an honor to be here, and I am very grateful for this invitation. I had never participated before, and I am delighted with everything I experienced today. I would like to thank the organizing team, Dr. Pedro, and especially my family members who came to accompany me”.

Activities and debates

The seminar brought together culture, knowledge, and reflection in a diverse programming. The discussion groups, led by Geriatrician Karla Cristina Giacomin and Psychologist Monique Débora Carvalho da Silva, opened up space for dialogue on mental health, care, and the role of the family and the State in protecting the elderly. The panels on “The Right to Care from a Public Policy Perspective” and “Who is Responsible for Care? Mental Health of the Elderly among the State, the Justice System, and the Family” reinforced the importance of public policies and strategies for comprehensive care for the elderly, promoting direct interaction between experts and participants.

Commitment

The Judiciary demonstrates its commitment to concrete actions to protect the rights of the elderly. The assistant judge to the president of the Court of Justice, Esmar Custódio Vêncio Filho, commented on the importance of the booklet launched during the seminar.

“This seminar shows the commitment of the Judiciary on guaranteeing the rights of the elderly in practice. The booklet is an example of this. Written in simple language, it provides guidance on rights, channels of access to Justice, and ways to protect against situations of vulnerability, such as scams,” he said.

Care

The initiative of the Third Seminar on the Elderly seeks to transform the concept of aging into practice, highlighting that old age is not synonymous with silence, but rather with active social contribution. Iraci Xerente, who attended the seminar, emphasized the importance of the event for the elderly.

“I am very happy to be participating in this movement for the first time. It is an important opportunity for us, because we hardly ever have outings or activities like this. I really enjoyed it and hope that in the future we will receive more invitations and even be able to take this type of programming to the villages”.

In addition, the programming reinforces the importance of mental health care for the elderly, a topic highlighted by Márcio Soares da Cunha, coordinating judge of the Coordination of Citizenship (Cocid). “The seminar focuses especially on mental health and care for the elderly. We launched a booklet that provides guidance on rights, fraud prevention, and places to seek assistance. We have much more to learn from the wisdom of the elderly than to teach them," he said.

Through initiatives such as the guidance booklet and the seminar itself, the Judiciary of the state of Tocantins demonstrates that respect for the elderly translates into care, protection, and effective inclusion. It is in this context of practice and commitment that the importance of recognizing and valuing the experience, wisdom, and ancestry of the elderly becomes evident.

“For me, this is one of the most important events we hold, because we are demonstrating and showing society the need to care for the elderly, indigenous people, and those who really need our care," concluded the Chief of Justice, Justice Pedro Nelson de Miranda Coutinho.
