At The End Of The National Meeting In TJTO, Minister Vieira De Mello Speaks Of Mobilization For The Development Of Restorative Education Management

"We don't intend to provide hasty solutions to urgent situations, but to mobilize the construction of a safe ground for the development of restorative education management, with safe practices, effective coordination and networking," said Minister Luiz Philippe Vieira de Mello Filho, Coordinator of the Management Committee of Restorative Justice of the National Council of Justice (CNJ), at the end of the 1st National Meeting of Restorative Justice in Education on Friday afternoon (August 25th), in the auditorium of the Court of Justice of the State of Tocantins.

The three-day event brought together more than 600 participants from all over the country and featured nationally and internationally renowned speakers.

"These three days have profoundly marked the history of Restorative Justice in Brazil," he emphasized.

The Minister stressed that the movement towards education needs to be careful and qualified.

"That each member of the school community can revisit their beliefs and theories about conflict and violence, so that they can act to transform school coexistence, in line with the values, principles and guidelines of the Restorative Justice," said Vieira de Mello, adding: "So that they can present ways of transforming conflicts other than punishment, based on dialogue, building individual and collective responsibility, meeting needs, repairing damage, harmonizing relationships, based on fundamental human rights," he added, reminding us that this is responsibility of everyone.

Breaking protocol at the end of his speech, the Minister said that, after 36 years in the judiciary, today he can no longer stop thinking about Restorative Justice. "In Restorative Justice, I found a group of magistrates who taught me to be deeply proud of the Brazilian justice," he said emotionally. "We need to transform ourselves and have a different lens.  We can't see the difference in those who traditionally don't identify with our gender, in those who are a different color than us, in those who socially aren't like us, and in those who don't think like us," he stressed, pointing out that we need to see the good in people.

Thanks

The Vice-president of the TJTO, Justice Angela Prudente, and the Deputy Director of the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (Esmat), Justice Angela Haonat, took part in the closing ceremony.

According to the Minister, the success of the meeting began with the excellent choice of speakers and he mentioned each one by name. At the same time, he thanked the President of the TJTO, Justice Etelvina Maria Sampaio Felipe, and the entire team of the Court of the State of Tocantins for their dedication in holding the event, which he said "had an impact from start to finish".

This was also the feeling shared by the participants of the event. Professor João Bosco, from the State of Rio de Janeiro, said he was ecstatic to see so many magistrates engaged in this perspective of the Restorative Justice in education.
