Passed without contestation the 30 days legal deadline for appeals of the provisional list of jurors summoned to act in the trial sessions of crimes against life, such as homicides and femicides, in the year of 2026. The 1st Criminal Court of the District of Palmas published the final list and maintained the equity of 178 male and 178 female persons.
The nominal list, which lists the names and professions of the 356 people appointed to the composition of the Body of Jurors of the district of Palmas, is in the Notice no 671, 2025, published in the Gazette of Justice on December 12th.
The 1st Criminal Court used as a basis to define the relationship of enlisted as volunteer jury throughout the year the electoral register of the Regional Electoral Court (TRE).
Although the list contains 356 names, for each trial session that Justice designates, 25 jurors of this general list will be drawn to attend the scheduled day, as determined by the article 433 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CPP).
Among the 25 present on the day of the trial, the CPP determines in its article 447 that 7 are drawn to form the Sentencing Council, which is the group that effectively decides whether the defendant is guilty or innocent, at each trial session.
Mandatory service
Article 426 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CPP) stipulates that the general list of jurors must be published in the press and posted on the door of the Jury Court with the indication of their profession.
The law determines that the Court of Jury is the popular collegiate competent to judge intentional crimes against life. The jury service is mandatory in Brazil and it covers citizens over 18 years of age who have "notorious suitability", that is, people with integrity and proven good reputation, as governed by the article 436 of the CPP.
“The requirement of suitability is important, because the jurors exercise the function of judges de facto in the trial. To ensure that the selected people meet this requirement, the 1st Criminal Court conducted a background check and other relevant information on each listed person", explains Judge Cledson Nunes.
The Code of Criminal Procedure (CPP) establishes the rules for annual enlistment. In counties with more than 100 thousand inhabitants, as is the case of the city of Palmas, the list must contain between 300 and 700 names, according to the article 425 of the CPP.
