The Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (Esmat) received, on Monday afternoon (November 3rd), the institutional visit of neuroscientist and expert in artificial intelligence Leandro Mattos and innovation consultant, Ernandes Rodrigues da Silva. The visit focused on the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence of Esmat (LIIARES), an unprecedented initiative among the Brazilian Judicial Schools.

“I was impressed not only by the structure to which I was presented, but also by the practical applications that are generating benefits for the Judiciary and for society", said Leandro Mattos.

Received by the general director of ESMAT and president of the Permanent College of Directors of State Schools of the Magistracy (Copedem), Justice Marco Villas Boas, the neuroscientist met the facilities of the School and participated in a dialogue with Doctor Professor Humberto Xavier de Araújo - scientific coordinator of LIIARES and lecturer of the Post Graduate Program in Judicial Provision and Human Rights (PPGGTD/ UFT) - and with Judge Wellington Magalhães, 2nd deputy director of the Council of Courses of ESMAT.

During the meeting, issues such as the ethical limits of technology, the importance of knowledge production with social impact and the role of institutions in building permanent spaces for innovation were discussed.

Leandro Mattos also shared experiences related to the discipline he teaches, focused on entrepreneurship and innovation, highlighting the inspiring potential of structures such as LIIARES in the training of academic and institutional leaders.

“I would like to congratulate all involved, the justice, for everything they are doing: from the creation and replication of knowledge to its practical application. It was a pride to know them and I hope that this structure and this progress will grow more and more", added.

In a comment, Professor Humberto Xavier highlighted the pioneering of Esmat in the area: "We know other institutions, and Esmat is ahead. Sometimes they are strategic people at strategic moments. Justice Marco Villas Boas is one of those people".

In recognition of the academic and professional contribution of Leandro Mattos, Professor Humberto Xavier and Ernandes Rodrigues da Silva, Justice Marco Villas Boas presented the Esmat Medallion. The honor is intended for personalities with multifaceted trajectory and relevant contribution to the institutional strengthening of the School and the enlargement of the Judiciary, especially in the area of Information Technology.

Visit Of Archbishop Pedro Brito

In the afternoon of Monday, the archbishop of the city of Palmas, Dom Pedro Brito, also visited Esmat. Received by Justice Marco Villas Boas, Dom Pedro met the facilities of the School.

During the meeting, it was discussed the proposal to build a joint activity between Esmat and the Archdiocese of Palmas, with a forecast for 2026. Judge Wellington Magalhães, responsible for the negotiations, explained that:

"The intersection between the domestic legal system and the canon law is particularly relevant in issues that touch on religious marriage with civil effects, recognition of confessional associations, protection of religious freedom, etc., demanding from the magistrates and civil servers a deep understanding of the boundaries and convergences between these normative spheres. In this context, the training scheduled for 2026, in a seminar format, seeks to offer theoretical and practical training focused on the analysis of concrete cases, in the light of the Federal Constitution, of the international human rights treaties and the International Agreement between Brazil and the Santa Sé (Holy See) - also known as the Concordat Brazil-Vatican, signed on November 13th, 2008 -, promoting an interdisciplinary dialogue that favors judicial decisions more sensitive to the cultural and spiritual dimensions of legal relations.”
