The Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV), based in the city of Rio de Janeiro, will hold the second edition of the course on “The challenges of democracy in the 21st century” between December 2nd and 6th. Coordinated by the vice-President of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), Justice Luís Felipe Salomão, the initiative has the institutional support of Anamatra. Also coordinating the training are Pedro H. Villas Bôas Castelo Branco, a political Scientist and Professor at the Institute of Social and Political Studies (Iesp) at UERJ, and Blanche Marie Evin, who holds a PhD in Political Science from UERJ.
The course will cover a variety of topics, including the tension between religion and politics, structural racism, political and gender violence and the environmental crisis. In addition, the course discusses the impact of new technologies on elections, as well as the effects of wars and political militarization on democracies. The concept of militant and defensive democracy, as well as its forms of implementation, will also be explored.
This second edition of the course offers a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics shaping the current political landscape, both in Brazil and abroad. The aim is not only to inform, but also to enable participants to develop critical and autonomous thinking about the problems that have been threatening social and political life.
The course is free of charge, but places are limited and the requirement is to pass the selection process.
