Conciliate Is Legal Award Recognizes Legal Projects Aimed At Peaceful Conflict Resolution

Lawyers and law firms have until November 8th to submit innovative practices via the electronic form for the 15th edition of the Conciliate is Legal Award. The Lawyer category recognized 33 initiatives between 2019 and 2023. This year, those focused on the self-composition of conflicts, the pacification of disputes and the improvement of the Judiciary will be selected.

Practices conducted by the legal profession that seek to resolve disputes by a consensual decision of the parties and expand national mobilization in favor of conciliation and mediation will be recognized. According to the regulations, only entries for projects in which both their applicability and results can be proven will be accepted.

Awarded

Sensitized by the significant lack of training courses dealing with conciliation or mediation, a group of lawyers from the State of Ceará created the BAR Conciliate project, winner of the Conciliate is Legal Award in the Education category in the edition of 2023. The initiative highlights the importance of self-composed solutions to conflicts. For the lawyers who developed the action, the lawyers registered with the Brazilian Bar Association (BAR), who number over 1.3 million, have a duty to promote and encourage Appropriate Means of Conflict Resolution (MASCs), as a way of preventing disputes from being brought before the courts.

On another front, law students from the Federal University of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) ensured the regularization of land for indigenous peoples in the Pantanal region. In 2023, the  legal team of the university identified 32 lawsuits pending before the Federal Court involving the Sustainable Use Authorization Term (TAUS), designed to regularize land occupied by traditional communities in federal areas. Of the total, 25 ended up being resolved in a court settlement and seven were withdrawn, meaning that 78% were resolved through a court settlement.
