The President of the National Council of Justice (CNJ) and the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, announced on Wednesday (September 18th) the launch of the campaign on “What do you have to do with it?”, to combat capacitism - attitudes and practices that underestimate the ability of people with disabilities. “Capacitism is everywhere in society, and this campaign brings reflection on the role of the family, the school, the State, companies, the police and, above all, the judiciary in tackling discrimination against people with disabilities in the country,” said the Minister.
The practice is also classified as a crime and it can result in a sentence of one to three years and a fine, according to the article 88 of the Brazilian Inclusion Law, or Statute for People with Disabilities (Law 13.146/2015).
Based on the 2022 Continuous National Survey for Household Sample (PNAD), Barroso noted that Brazil has 18.6 million people with disabilities. The labor force participation rate among people without disabilities was 66.4%, while among people with disabilities it drops to 29.2%. According to him, in the judiciary these figures are even lower. “Only 0.8% of Judges and 2.9% of civil servers are people with disabilities,” he said.

At the launch of the campaign, a video was shown which will be posted on the social networks of the STF and the CNJ, with the participation of influencers, civil servers, Judges and experts on the subject. Among them are Judge Larissa Camargo Pinho of the TJRO, former athlete Laís Souza and the member of the Committee of the Disability Rights of the CNJ Isadora Nascimento, all of whom have disabilities.
The campaign
The campaign seeks to break down prejudices and stereotypes that often marginalize and make people with disabilities invisible. Through a series of actions, including educational videos, social media posts and events, the CNJ and the STF intend to foster an open and constructive dialog about the importance of inclusion and accessibility. At the STF, the campaign is another initiative of the Green September, the month of rights for people with disabilities.
People with disabilities involved in the campaign voluntarily share their unique perspectives and the challenges they face on a daily basis. Their participation is crucial to provide an authentic and relevant view.
