General Director of Esmat teaches lecture on self-determination for traditional indigenous peoples

The historical contexts of self-determination of the original peoples in America, especially the Brazilian traditional peoples, and the promotion of equal rights nowadays were debated in the Indigenous Peoples and the Justice System Webinar, promoted by the Court of the State of Acre and the School of the Judiciary (ESJUD). On the occasion, the General Director of the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (ESMAT) gave a lecture and presented activities developed with indigenous peoples in the State of Tocantins.

Highlighting the historical context of the arrival of Europeans in Brazilian territory, the Judge pointed out the organization of classes and social development even before the colonization process implemented by the Portuguese.  "When the Europeans arrived, they found civilizations that had been developing for 20, 40 thousand years. So America can be considered the cradle of self-determination," he stated.

In the lecture alluding to the promotion of the rights of Brazilian native and traditional peoples, the Judge recalled the struggle for autonomy and maintenance of rights of traditional peoples throughout the ages. "We must recognize their legal definition that it is these diverse concepts that lead us to think of self-determination and sovereignty not simply as a result of a traditional concept alone," he said.

Also at the event, the Judge recalled the activities developed by the Regional Electoral Court (TRE) in traditional indigenous communities in the State of Tocantins, with the elaboration of an educational primer on the electoral process, as well as informative lectures and empowerment of indigenous women and young leaders.
