With a focus on technological innovation and critical thinking, the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (Esmat) began its third class of the course on Digital Transformation in the Judiciary on Thursday (August 7th). Aimed at magistrates and advisors of the Court of Justice of the State of Tocantins (TJTO), the in-person training, totaling 16 class hours, is taught by Justice Marco Villas Boas, general director of Esmat.

The course combines theory and practice to discuss the impacts of digitization on the Justice system, especially the application of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), process automation, and tools such as Bing Chat and Copilot.

During the course, Professor Marco Villas Boas presents a historical context for the implementation of AI, highlighting how the first artificial intelligence systems sought to imitate human reasoning through mechanical information processing, leading neuroscience to interpret the brain as a network capable of storing, retrieving, and processing data through the interaction among multiple neurons.

“This trajectory exemplifies the challenges faced by AI in the legal context, requiring not only greater computing power, but also a critical understanding of the organization and ethical use of information," he said.

About the course

With a critical and interdisciplinary approach, the course promotes reflection on the ethical, legal, and social challenges brought about by emerging technologies. Participants also took part in practical workshops, with simulations of the use of AI for drafting, procedural management, and screening of claims. The active methodology applied to the course sought to develop technical and strategic skills, aligned with the principles of algorithmic governance and the need to modernize the administration of Justice.
