The Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence of the Superior School of the Judges of the State of  Tocantins (LIIARES/ Esmat), inaugurated on September 4th, in the city of Palmas, was highlighted on the evening of Tuesday (September 16th), in a report broadcast by Anhanguera 2nd Edition News (Anhanguera TV/Globo). The article presented to the community the objectives of the Laboratory, which unites innovation, research and practical application of artificial intelligence in the Judiciary of the state of Tocantins.

During the interview, the general director of ESMAT and president of the Permanent College of Directors of State Schools of the Magistracy (Copedem), Justice Marco Villas Boas, highlighted the commitment of the institution to digital transformation.

The creation of LIIARES is regulated by the Resolution no 447, of 2025, which also establishes the Laboratory Management Committee, with members representing the Judiciary, the academic community, the technical area and students linked to active projects. The Committee, coordinated by Justice Angela Issa Haonat, will have its first deliberative meeting this Friday (September 19th).

Installed at the headquarters of Esmat, the Laboratory was conceived as a research, development and training environment focused on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Justice System. The structure offers researchers cutting-edge equipments, such as 3D printers and augmented reality glasses, and fosters projects ranging from field automation and soil moisture data analysis to the monitoring of attention patterns in classrooms.

In addition to fostering scientific production, LIIARES will also be a support channel for the digital governance of the TJTO, aligning itself with the norms of the National Council of Justice (CNJ), such as nº 615, of 2025, and nº 332, of 2020.

The selection of projects will be made by public notice, according to the criteria defined in the Chapter VI of the Resolution 447, which provides for:

  • Scientific relevance, innovation and applicability in the context of Justice;
  • Emphasis on Artificial Intelligence, Law, Governance and Digital Transformation;
  • Clear objectives, feasible schedule and well-defined methodology;
  • Qualified team, with at least one member with title of master;
  • Preference for links with LATO or STRICTO SENSU post graduate courses from Esmat or partner institutions;
  • Plan for dissemination of results and institutional impact.

The notices for concession of research grants will be launched soon, including researchers, doctors, masters, post graduate students and technical collaborators, with an initial duration of up to 12 months, renewable for the same period. The selection, monitoring and evaluation of the scholarships will be in charge of the Manager Committee.

In addition to the institutional structure of LIIARES, research initiatives have already been published. Two examples are the articles on "Artificial Intelligence in the Judiciary: analysis of challenges and guidelines from the LIIARES Project", published in the DERECHO Y CAMBIO SOCIAL (DCS) Journal, which analyzes the strategic role of the project in the context of the Resolution 615, of the CNJ, highlighting the impacts of AI on the modernization of the Judiciary, in the pillars of efficiency, transparency and access to Justice. The research points out promising paths for process automation, algorithmic governance and public service, without ignoring challenges such as explainability, data protection and bias mitigation.

And the second, "Use of LoRa and Satelital technologies in Sustainable Agriculture", proposes connections among artificial intelligence, climate justice and public sustainability policies, with emphasis on data applied to the field and territorial development.
