Unique biodiversity, stories and ways of life that cross generations. These are the riches of the Jalapão region and its surroundings, and they don't just fit on maps. Preserving all this is no simple task. Among environmental challenges, economic pressures and historical inequalities, managing these territories requires real dialog and commitment.
With this in mind, the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (Esmat) is holding the Jalapão Mosaic Seminar on August 11th and 12th. Coordinated by Judge Wellington Magalhães, the meeting will take place entirely in person, in the auditorium and classrooms of Esmat, and it aims to promote training and awareness about integrated and articulated territorial and environmental management of protected areas.
Programming
The programming includes moments of listening, exchanges of experiences and practical workshops. The opening ceremony will feature the magna lecture on “Shared and Integrated Management of Protected Areas in the Continental Amazon”, given by Justice Marco Villas Boas, general director of Esmat and president of the Permanent College of Directors of State Schools of the Magistracy (Copedem). This will be followed by a conceptual overview of the implementation of mosaics in Brazil, with Marcos Roberto Pinheiro (Remap) and João Guilherme Nunes Cruz (Remap/ISPN).
Thematic panels will then discuss what has been done and what still needs to be done. One of the meetings will discuss the challenges and potential of management of the Conservation Units, with representatives from ICMBio, EPA of Jalapão, RPPN Catedral (Cathedral) of Jalapão and Inema/BA. Another panel will present the views of quilombola communities and civil society on land management.
At another point, thematic workshops will open up space for closer conversations about the integration of knowledge, training and the collective construction of solutions. On the 12th the seminar will close with a panel discussion and a plenary session of proposals.
