In A Multigenerational Event, The General Internal Affairs Of Justice Promotes Debate On Longevity, Protection And Appreciation Of The Elderly

In the presence of her 93 year-old mother, Anestides Candido Vendramini, the Chief Justice of the State of Tocantins, Justice Maysa Vendramini Rosal, opened the II Seminar on the Elderly in the Judiciary. The event was held on Tuesday (October 8th) in the auditorium of the Court of Justice of the State of Tocantins (TJTO).

“We live in times in which longevity is increasing and, with this, new challenges and responsibilities arise in caring for, respecting and promoting the quality of life of those who have already contributed so much to the development of our communities,” said the Chief Justice when highlighting the theme of the seminar, which this year addresses the role of the Judiciary in building dignified ageing. 

“Today, God has given me the opportunity to have my mother here with me. I feel deeply blessed to have her by my side,” she added.

Now in its second edition, the event organized by the Coordination of Citizenship of the General Internal Affairs of Justice of the State of Tocantins (CGJUS), in partnership with the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (Esmat), proposed a reflection on the role of the Judiciary in guaranteeing aging with respect and dignity for the people of the State of Tocantins. 

“This event should be called the Wise Person Seminar. At the top of our long ages, we have acquired an experience of solidarity and brotherhood, an understanding of the world that elevates us as human beings in all our fullness,” said General Director of Esmat, Justice Marco Villas Boas.

With the participation of representatives from various institutions and bodies that work to protect the rights and promote the quality of life of the elderly, as well as students from a public school in the city of Palmas, the seminar was the stage for a multigenerational meeting. For the Coordination of Citizenship of CGJUS, Odete Almeida, the seminar was an opportunity for dialog and progress in the debates on the subject.

“This event adds a lot of knowledge, it was thought up with great care and dedication so that we can talk together; we know how relevant the needs of the elderly are and the Judiciary is no longer static when it comes to social responsibility,” she said. 

Lecture

The opening lecture of the seminar was given by Monize da Silva Freitas Marques, assistant Judge of the General Internal Affairs of Justice of the Federal District and coordinator of the Judicial Center for the Elderly of the TJDF. Participating remotely, the Judge addressed the topic “Ageing: phenomenon, health and law. How the Judiciary can be a determining factor in the construction of dignified ageing”. In her speech, the Judge highlighted the importance of the judiciary adapting to the social changes brought about by increased life expectancy, pointing out that complex social issues end up reaching the judicial system.

The speaker also presented relevant data on population aging, including the State of Tocantins. “Tocantins already has 12.2% of its population aged 60 or over, a figure close to the national average, which is just over 14%, according to the IBGE. Brazil is undergoing an accelerated ageing process and it is expected that by 2040, 28% of the population will be made up of elderly people. This calls for a restructuring of public policies, especially in the areas of health and resource management,” she warned.

Dr. Monize also stressed the need for public policies that promote the active inclusion of the elderly in society and in the job market. 

“It is essential to ensure that the elderly population has access to decent health conditions and it continues to contribute to the labor market, combating unproductivity and promoting well-being.” 

The Judge concluded by stressing that ageing requires a more engaged approach from all sectors of society: “Brazil needs a new perspective on care and policies that ensure healthy ageing for the population,” said Monize Marques.

Tribute

In honor of the National Older Persons Day, celebrated on October 1st, the Director of the Tocantins Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins, Justice Marco Villas Boas, presented the Esmat Medallion to Mrs. Anestides Vendramini. At the age of 93, she was honored as a representative of the elderly population of the State of Tocantins, in recognition of her wisdom and experience; and for the fundamental role that older people play in building a fairer and more conscious society.

Cultural presentation

O evento também foi enriquecido por uma apresentação cultural do grupo de dança Flores do Ipê, da Universidade da Maturidade (UMA/UFT). O grupo apresentou a coreografia “Sou Tocantinense Sim Senhor”, celebrando as raízes culturais do estado e destacando a vitalidade e alegria das pessoas idosas.

The event was also enriched by a cultural performance by the “Flores do Ipê” (Ipê Flowers) dance group from the University of Maturity (UMA/UFT). The group performed the choreography: “I am from Tocantins, Yes, Sir”, celebrating the cultural roots of the State and highlighting the vitality and joy of the elderly.
