Marista School Of The City Of Palmas Donates 568 Books To The Campaign Of Esmat In Favor Of Indigenous School

On Tuesday (June 24th), the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (Esmat) received a donation of 568 children and youth books from the Marista School of the city of Palmas. The books will be sent to the library of the Xerente Warã Indigenous High School, located in the city of Tocantínia (TO), as part of the campaign on “Reading among trees: education that flourishes”, promoted by Esmat.

The delivery was made by Librarian Mikally Amanajás, head of the Brother Luís Ângelo Library. In a statement, Mikally explained the purpose of the initiative and how Marista School encourages the circulation of books between different reading communities.

“Our motto here at Marista School is to encourage people to read printed books. So, whenever we can, we make books available: books everywhere, books for all ages and quality literature. To be able to donate these books is to get them into the hands of students who may not be able to afford to buy them. Here in the library, these were in duplicate, in the process of being evaluated for our collection, and we can withdraw these copies without them being missed. We'd rather have the book circulating than see it shelved or stored on a piece of furniture. So we donate them with great pleasure and in the knowledge that they will make a difference to the lives of other students," said Mikally.

Thanking people for their contributions, Silvânia Olortegui, librarian at Esmat, stressed the importance of initiatives like this. "Whether it's new or used books, any contribution is extremely valuable. Books are powerful tools for transformation and learning. With this donation, Marista will provide the readers of the Xerente Warã Indigenous High School with an opportunity to expand their knowledge by promoting access to reading," she commented.

The Xerente Warã Indigenous High School currently serves around 340 students from the Akwẽ-Xerente ethnic group.
