About the lecturer

The great leader known as Chief Raoni was probably born in the early 1930s, in an ancient Mebêngôkre (Kayapó) village called Kraimopry-yaka, in the northeast of the State of Mato Grosso. In 1954, when the Mẽbêngôkre people established definitive contact with the whites, Chief Raoni was around 24 years old and played a fundamental role in the pacification process of several villages. At that time, he met the Villas Boas brothers, with whom he learned how to speak Portuguese and became aware of the non-indigenous world. Throughout his career, Chief Raoni has been a protagonist in several struggles on behalf of the indigenous peoples and the Amazon, and he has become internationally recognized as a legitimate leader and spokesperson for the preservation of the environment.
