On Monday morning (November 18th), the academic activities of the 1st Integrating Seminar of the Professional Master's Degree in Judicial Provision and Human Rights, promoted by the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (Esmat) in partnership with the Federal University of the State of Tocantins (UFT), began. The event brings together master's students, professors and authorities from the headquarters (city of Palmas) with those from the off-site class (states of Roraima and Acre).
The opening ceremony was attended by Justice Marco Vilas Boas, General Director of Esmat and President of the Permanent College of Directors of State Schools of the Magistracy (Copedem), Justice Ângela Prudente, President of the Esmat Council, Professor Tarsis Barreto, coordinator of the Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Program in Judicial Provision and Human Rights, and Professor Antônio Carlos dos Santos, coordinator of the event. Also taking part are Justice Élcio Mendes, Director of the School of the Judges of the State of Acre (Esjud), and Justice Lois Arruda, the Pedagogical Coordinator of the school. Both Justices are Master's students in the off-site class.
In his speech, Justice Marco Villas Boas highlighted the Master's efforts since its implementation, the development of the selection processes until the approval of the Doctorate program, with the selection process scheduled for the first semester of 2025. “Dialogue with academia has resulted in the creation of a special Master's class in Human Rights for the North of the country, in an attempt to make up for the historical lack of stricto sensu training in the region. Although the course has been well evaluated by Capes, it is recognized that there is a need to improve the communication of academic production in order to achieve better scores. The success of the program is evidenced by the XVII International Congress on Human Rights, with the participation of renowned international experts, and by the significant presence of master's students from the states of Acre and Roraima, contributing to the enrichment of the course and the development of the region,” he said.
According to Professor Tarsis Barreto, coordinator of the Master's program, the event is a revolutionary milestone in Brazil for bringing together several institutions from the North in favor of training and research in Human Rights. “The richness of the program lies in the master's students, highly qualified professionals who, with their work, are already making significant progress in the area,” he said.
For Justice Elcio Mendes, academic and Director of Esjud, the opportunity to hold the master's degree with the academics from the state of Acre reflects the importance of the partnership with Esmat in the person of Justice Marco Villas Boas, General Director. “When we see a moment like this, in which we know the gratitude of each of the members, and I can speak from the heart of each of the colleagues from the state of Acre who are here, this is gratitude for their vision, not just their own, but of the collective and, more properly, of designing a future in the sharing of knowledge. And when you distribute this knowledge, outline these methodologies, it makes the result that we can provide to that humble citizen who knocks on our door,” he said.
