The fight for the representation of native peoples in the Federal Chamber, with the election of indigenous representatives who fight for the causes of their people, giving them a place to speak that results in action, was the theme of the fifth edition of the Cine Forum Rights View Project, of the Stricto Sensu Graduate Program in Jurisdictional Provision and Human Rights, promoted by the School of Judges of Tocantins (ESMAT) in partnership with the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT). The work used in the activity was the short film “Indians in Power”, available for free on YouTube platform.
Produced in 2015 and directed by the filmmaker Rodrigo Arajeju, the work, which has won several awards, shows the challenge of indigenous leaders to win a seat in the federal legislature, with parliamentary opponents of the ruralist bench and the disinterest of the Brazilian population in electing representatives of the social minorities rights.
The work also emphasizes part of the history of the former federal deputy Mário Juruna, who died in 2002, who until 2018 was the only representative of indigenous peoples to win a seat in the Chamber of Deputies, after being elected by the State of Rio de Janeiro in 1982.
Participated in this Cine Forum session, coordinated by the master student Laudyone Edmailtom dos Santos Arruda, Wellington Magalhães, Francisco Edviges Albuquerque, Patricia Coêlho Aguiar, Narúbia Werreia, Watatakalu Magalhães, Reijane Pinheiro, Gustavo Menezes and Maria Santana, in addition to university professors, students from undergraduate and graduate courses, indigenous people, professionals working at the Regional Electoral Court of Tocantins (TRE-TO), at the Indian National Foundation (FUNAI), Indigenous Missionary Council (CIMI) and the community in general.
