Project Of The Judiciary Of The State Of Tocantins, Educajus Will Sow The Seeds Of The Restorative Justice In Public Schools Of The State Of Tocantins

After the experience with 9th grade students from two public schools in the municipalities of Guaraí and Tabocão, the EducaJus – Chatting with Justice (De papo com a Justiça) project, run by the Judiciary of the State of Tocantins, will be taken to other public educational institutions in the State. The information was shared by the Assistant Judge of the Presidency, Rosa Maria Gazire, when she gave the lecture: "The experience of the State of Tocantins - Raising Awareness of the Restorative Justice", on Thursday afternoon (August 24th), at the II Panel of the 1st National Meeting of Restorative Justice in Education, which is taking place until this Friday (25th), in the auditorium of the Court of Justice of the State of Tocantins (TJTO). 

"It's a bond of trust between justice and society," said the Judge, as she told the participants a little about her encounter with education and her experience of bringing the Restorative Justice to schools in the State of Tocantins.

The creator and coordinator of EducaJus, the Judge said that the project was born out of interdisciplinary research into education that she is carrying out in her master's program. As she explained, this is a socio-legal education program, with an emphasis on human rights. "The aim of this program is to emancipate adolescents in the 9th grade, transforming them, through education, into subjects of rights and duties for the practice of citizenship."

When reflecting on the importance of schools today, the magistrate asked: "Are you prepared to work with this new proposal? And do you want to welcome change?" she asked, stressing that the Judiciary can be supportive. "We are here hand in hand for this cultural transformation. From an increasingly healthy school community".

On the occasion, the Judge emphasized the support she had received from the State Department of Education and said that, through this proposal, it is possible to have the ability to cure any and all forms of violence, which for her represents a public health problem. "People need care. I believe that care is what will lead to the real achievement of peace," she said, stressing that it takes courage, commitment, respect, humility and a lot of love in heart.

Violent attacks can happen in any school, says lecturer 

"Contrary to popular belief, it can happen in any school," said Telma Vinha, a Pedagogue and PhD in Education, when talking about violent attacks in schools, during the other lecture of the II Panel, with the theme: "Extreme violence and possibilities for a transformative approach in schools".  

Based on data from the mapping of attacks of extreme violence in schools, the Educator said that more than 80% of the schools attacked are of medium, medium-high and high socioeconomic status.

Starting with the first attack recorded in Brazil, in the State of Bahia, in 2001, she said that since then there have been 33 attacks. The two main ones with the most deaths were in the localities of Suzano and Realengo.  Over the whole period, there have been 130 victims, 97 of whom have been injured and 33 fatalities, excluding five suicides.

As for the profile of the perpetrators of the attacks, in Brazil, the speaker said, they are very young boys, almost 80% of whom are under the age of 18. "We have thousands of boys and girls interacting in communities. So it's something we have to be very aware of," she warned, referring to chats, online games, videos, profiles, etc.

Also according to the study released by the speaker, the average number of cases of bullying is 13%, but when it comes to homosexual students, for example, it rises to 40%, and black students to 29%.  "Violence at school is just the tip of the iceberg." Telma also highlighted some types of behavior that educators should look out for.

As proposals to combat this problem, the speaker mentioned the approval of bills aimed at greater regulation and accountability of the platforms; accountability of those who disseminate videos from the internal circuit of schools; registration of attacks that have taken place and cases that have been solved by the police by creating an integrated data system on this type of violence, among others.

The II Panel was coordinated by the Executive Secretary of the Department of Education of the State of Tocantins, Eder Martins Fernandes, and included the participation of Taynã Nunes Quixabeira, Facilitator and Instructor of Peacebuilding Circles at the Court of Justice of the State of Tocantins.
