Registrations Are Open: Enfam Promotes "The Woman Judge" Course

Between March 18th and May 3rd, the National School for the Training and Improvement of Magistrates (Enfam) will promote the continuing education course on The Woman Judge, aimed at federal and state magistrates. The course will be distance learning, with synchronous and asynchronous classes.

With vacancies available for 40 participants and a total workload of 20 hours, the course is an opportunity to deepen the debate on the participation of women in the judiciary and promote the effective implementation of gender equality policies in the Brazilian Judiciary. People interested in taking part must fill in the electronic form available on the website of Enfam by March 8th.

Context

The under-representation of women in the Brazilian judiciary has been the subject of research and debate for decades. Studies carried out since 1996 reveal a gender imbalance in the composition of the national judiciary. According to a survey of 2019 by the National Council of Justice (CNJ), women represent 38.8% of the total judiciary in Brazil, with even lower percentages in higher positions, such as Judges (25.7%) and Ministers (19.6%).

To address this disparity, the CNJ has adopted measures such as the Resolution 255/18, which establishes the National Policy to Encourage Institutional Participation of Women in the Judiciary. In partnership with Enfam, in 2019 the CNJ promoted the course on The Woman Judge - career challenges and acting for gender equality, to train and debate gender issues, with around 150 members of the judiciary.

The topic has also been the subject of academic research, such as the Professional Master's Degree of the School and the Study and Research Group on Gender, Race and Ethnic Inequalities in the Judiciary (GEPDI 11). In November 2022, the latter published a partial report on the participation of women in the CNJ, during the event Women in Justice: new directions for the Resolution 255 of the CNJ. In addition, in September 2023, the CNJ issued the Resolution No. 525, which provides for affirmative gender action for female access of the Judges to second-level courts.
