Cine Forum “Rights View” dialogues about human rights education with the film “Freedom Writers”

In another edition of the cinematographic works discussion with an approach to raise awareness and promote Human Rights, the research group Education in Human Rights, of the Stricto Sensu Graduate Program in Human Rights and Jurisdictional Provision, promoted by the School of Judges of Tocantins (ESMAT) in partnership with the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT), held this Tuesday (25th), a Webinar on the film “Freedom Writers” (2007), an American production starring the actress Hilary Swank, winner of the Oscar for best actress.

The Cine Forum Session was coordinated by the master student Marcela Santa Cruz Melo (PPGPJDH) and had as facilitators the graduates Débora Galan, Rayka Valadares and Julliane Freire Marques, and the restorative facilitators Katiane Boschetti Silveira and Taynã Nunes Quixabeira.

The event also included the participation of the Human Rights Center representatives, undergraduate students in Pedagogy and Law, graduates of the master's degree, magistrates, public defenders, members of the community and teachers from the municipal and state education networks, in addition to university professors. The virtual forum also counted on the presence of the Doctor-professor Patrícia Medina, leader of the research group.

According to the synopsis of the film, in Freedom Writers (original title in English) a young and idealistic teacher arrives at a school in a poor neighborhood, which is corrupted by aggression and violence. Students are rebellious and unwilling to learn, and there is constant racial tension between them. Thus, in order to make students learn and also talk more about their complicated lives, Professor Gruwell (Hilary Swank) makes use of different teaching methods. Gradually, the students regain confidence in themselves and start to accept more knowledge and values such as tolerance and respect for others.

The Cine Forum Rights View is an activity that is part of the EducaDH Extension Project, linked to the Education and Human Rights Research Group, of the Master’s Program in Jurisdictional Delivery and Human Rights, at the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT), in partnership with the School of Judges of Tocantins 9PPGPJDH / UFT / ESMAT), State Public Defender (DPE) and aims to raise awareness about human rights through qualified dialogue on themes and daily practices of society, stimulated by cinematographic language; contribute to the formation of a culture of peace and education in Human Rights as part of the research of the master’s course in Jurisdictional Provision and Human Rights; promote access to culture and scientific dialogue on human rights with society, allowing free and plural participation in a space of interconnectedness; and to disseminate, in an interdisciplinary way, the legal and scientific knowledge about Human Rights and the content of the research carried out within the scope of the PPGPJDH / ESMAT. Four other debates on cinematographic productions are planned that discuss the rights of the child, the elderly, indigenous people and technology and justice.
