The State Prosecution of Tocantins (MPTO) has announced that registrations are now open for the 1st Congress on Food and Nutritional Security in the city of Palmas, a free event that will take place from October 8th to 10th. The central theme of the Congress is “Guaranteeing the Human Right to Adequate Food.”

Held in the auditorium of the MPTO, the event will also be broadcast ONLINE, allowing a wider audience to participate.

Target audience and goal

The Congress was conceived by prosecutor Paulo Alexandre Rodrigues de Siqueira, a doctoral student in the Post Graduate Program in Judicial Provision and Human Rights at the Federal University of the state of Tocantins (UFT) and the Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (Esmat), and its main objective is to strengthen coordination between institutions and civil society to combat food and nutritional insecurity in the city of Palmas.

The event is aimed at:

  • Members of the State Prosecution of Tocantins;
  • Members of the Justice System;
  • Representatives of public policy councils;
  • Leaders of traditional communities;
  • Academics (students, professors) and members of civil society interested in the topic.

Despite legal advances, the organizers of the Congress emphasize that the city of Palmas still faces challenges in ensuring adequate nutrition, especially among vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and families living in extreme poverty. The event therefore seeks to strengthen public governance and participatory democracy by promoting a strategic debate on the topic.

Programming and methodology

With a total duration of 15 hours, the Congress programming is divided into three thematic areas:

     1. The Human Right to Adequate Food: Discussions on current challenges and the role of the Justice System.

     2. Participatory Governance and Inter institutional Cooperation: Focus on strengthening the National Food and Nutrition Securit System (Sisan).

     3. Promotion of Healthy Eating: Debates on sustainability, food security for vulnerable populations, and the role of water and land in this context.

The event will have a participatory and interdisciplinary methodology, with exhibitions, debates, and the drafting of a “Letter from Palmas,” a final document that will summarize the proposals and commitments of the Congress. In addition, the proceedings and scientific articles produced will be published to disseminate knowledge.
