Blue September Promotes Debate On Accessibility Of The Deaf Community And Combat To Capacitism

The Superior School of the Judges of the State of Tocantins (Esmat) held, on Monday (September 29th), the round of conversation on "Accessibility, inclusion of the deaf community and combat capacitism", in the auditorium of the institution. The activity was part of the Blue September programming and it was conducted by the Permanent Commission on Accessibility and Inclusion (CPAI) and the Commission on Prevention and Tackling with Moral, Sexual Harassment and Discrimination in the 2nd Degree (CASSEDIO2G).

The opening was made by Justice Ângela Issa Haonat, president of the Permanent Commission on Accessibility and Inclusion (CPAI) and the Commission for the Prevention and Tackling with Moral, Sexual Harassment and Discrimination in the 2nd Degree (CASSEDIO2G), which reinforced the meaning of the month for human rights and inclusion agenda.

“Blue September is a milestone for the deaf community and for all those who defend human rights, accessibility and respect for differences. The full participation of deaf people is not a concession, it is an inalienable human right", she said. 

In her speech, the Justice highlighted data on the Brazilian reality and the need for effective public policies: "Brazil has more than 10 million people with some degree of hearing impairment, 2.7 million with severe or deep deafness, and we still face structural and communication barriers. We will continue to advance in training, assertive technologies, physical adjustments and cultural changes, because true inclusion occurs when each person can be the protagonist of their own history, in their own language", she said. 

Luan Crispim, Bruno Gonçalves Carneiro, Jefferson Brandão Feitosa, Agnaldo Quintino and Gabriela Otaviani Barbosa participated as debaters in the round of conversation. The event was also attended by Judge Wellington Magalhães deputy director of ESMAT, who represented the President of the Court of Justice, Justice Maysa Vendramini Rosal; Judge Flávia Afini Bovo, director of the Forum of the city of Palmas and president of the Commission for the Prevention and Combating Moral and Sexual Harassment within the scope of the 1st Degree of PJTO (Judiciary of the State of Tocantins); of Patricia Idehara, Executive Secretary of the Permanent Committee on Accessibility and Inclusion of the Judiciary and of the Executive Secretariat of the Commission for the Prevention and Tackling with Moral, Sexual and Discrimination in the 2nd Degree (CASSEDIO2G), Maria Clara Rezende Duarte Queiroz, in addition to municipal and state authorities of directories related to the theme.

The president of the Deaf Association of the city of Palmas, Jefferson Brandão Feitosa, highlighted the role of the organization in increasing the representation and circulation of information.

“The association exists to give visibility to our guidelines and show deaf children that everything is fine: we belong to all spaces of society. We invite the listening community to visit us, listen to our demands and build accessibility in services, even in health," he said.

He also reinforced the historical sense of the Blue September and tackling with prejudice: "There is still a lot of prejudice; we do not lack capacity, opportunities and accessibility. Our flag symbolizes the diversity of the deaf community and reminds us that inclusive education is a global challenge," he said. 

About the event

The activity reinforced the convergence among the Judiciary, academia and civil society to disseminate inclusive practices, combat capacitism and broaden respect for Libras in public service. Esmat reported that the proposal was aligned with the guidelines of the CNJ and the institutional policies of the TJTO, promoting awareness and training of magistrates and civil servers in accessibility and inclusion.
